The Gateway Pundit website published what it said was a list of seventy Democrats that belong to the Socialist Party of America caucus. Below is an excerpt from the article that supposedly came from the Socialist Party of America 2009 newsletter:
American Socialist Voter–
Q: How many members of the U.S. Congress are also members of the DSA?
A: Seventy
Q: How many of the DSA members sit on the Judiciary Committee?
A: Eleven: John Conyers [Chairman of the Judiciary Committee], Tammy Baldwin, Jerrold Nadler, Luis Gutierrez,
Melvin Watt, Maxine Waters, Hank Johnson, Steve Cohen, Barbara Lee, Robert Wexler, Linda Sanchez [there are 23 Democrats on the Judiciary Committee of which eleven, almost half, are now members of the DSA].
Q: Who are these members of 111th Congress?
A: See the listing below
Co-Chairs
Hon. Raúl M. Grijalva (AZ-07)
Hon. Lynn Woolsey (CA-06)
Vice Chairs
Hon. Diane Watson (CA-33)
Hon. Sheila Jackson-Lee (TX-18)
Hon. Mazie Hirono (HI-02)
Hon. Dennis Kucinich (OH-10)
The list goes on to show the rest of the Democratic politicians that are said to be a part of this caucus. I made several calls to Reps Barbara Lee, Denise Kuncinich and Lynn Woolsey this morning seeking comment and after talking to staffers I was transfered to their respective press secretary's voice mail. I have sent faxes and FaceBook messages to other Representatives as well seeking comment on the Gateway Pundit story but to no avail. However, I just received a call from Rep Woolsey's press secretary (Carl Rauscher) denying the story and claiming that he has never heard of the socialist caucus and quite frankly neither have I. He went on to state that Rep Woolsey was in fact a member of the Progressive Caucus, which is not a groundbreaking revelation. Mr. Rauscher questioned whether the Socialist Party of America (SPA) even existed upon which I informed him they have in fact existed since the early 20th century. I also sent an email to the SPA asking for clarification on the alleged 2009 newsletter and as of this writing have not heard back from them. I will do more checking on this story to see if it has legs and hopefully I will hear back from other Reps either admitting or denying this story. As of now it looks like just another hoax hitting the net. I would like to thank Carl for doing some leg work on his end and getting back to me.
